Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement Manager – STEADFAST Project (FTC 31 August 2022)

Job Introduction

Diabetes UK has a strategic priority to cure and prevent diabetes. Diabetes UK and Cardiff University are working together on the STEADFAST project, which will build on and develop best-practice public and patient involvement and engagement (‘PPIE’) frameworks for research, using sensitive data across health and social impacts at scale. You will lead all the PPIE aspects of the STEADFAST project. We are using education outcomes for young people with diabetes as an exemplar in order to develop this PPIE framework. You will ideally have experience of working with patients and the public to support research. Given the rapid timeframe of the project (to 31st August 2022) we would welcome secondments and will consider consultancy opportunities.

The STEADFAST project is a funded by UK Research and Innovation as part of the DARE UK programme, which seeks to deliver next-generation digital research environments across the UK research councils.

Role Responsibility

The PPIE Manager, STEADFAST project will lead all patient and public involvement and engagement activities for the project, working with our partners Cardiff University, Egality Health and others. You will work with Egality Health to develop and run workshops to explore the views of young people with diabetes and their families around the use of sensitive data in research. You will build on existing best practices in PPIE (such as the NIHR Involve Framework) to develop a toolkit for PPIE to support research which uses sensitive data at scale. You’ll work with a wide range of partners and stakeholders such as Diabetes Research Steering Groups to consult them on their views. You will provide input into the final report which will inform requirements for the DARE programme overall and help the UK to deliver cutting-edge health and social science research using large-scale datasets.

The Ideal Candidate

This is an exciting and innovative opportunity for a talented individual with PPIE or related professional experience, for example working in PPIE for a community group, university or charity. You will be used to communicating with diverse sectors of society and adapting your language and communications for the relevant group. You will be adept at facilitating workshops with patients and members of the public to elicit their views on complex topics, such as the use of sensitive data for research. You will be a flexible and highly self-motivated individual, able to achieve to tight deadlines with limited supervision in a complex project with multiple partners. Ideally you will also have a good working knowledge of information governance related to the use of data in health/ biomedical/ social sciences research.
